The Pocket Round

6-7 mile swim/run challenge

The Pocket Round is a swim-run challenge (depending on route choice) starting and finishing at The Pocket, Keswick. Walk or run, there is no time or age constraint.

The Route

Head through the underpass to the shores of Derwentwater and take the trails (or road) towards Calf Close Bay. Enter the lake and swim to Rampsholme Island. Exit the water and traverse the island on foot and then swim to St. Herbert’s Island. Again, traverse the island on foot before swimming to the tiny Otterbield Island. Stand on Otterbield Island. Head to the west lake shore to finish the swim. From there take the trails and road once more to return to Keswick and to the front door of The Pocket! Please note that the round must only be completed in a clockwise direction.

Safety

Fancy something a bit more challenging?

You should always regard your safety as paramount and undertake the challenge at your own risk. The lake swim is about 1 mile so be sure that you have the skills to be able to manage this – both in terms of the distance and in terms of your confidence and ability in open water swimming. Be aware of other lake users and boats at all times. A wetsuit is advisable and a tow float an essential safety resource. You may wish to consider having a boat for support on the water. The map shows a suggested route, exact lake entry and exit points are a matter of personal choice. Note, Otterbield Island can be hard to identify from St. Herbert’s so take time to locate it. Pop in and ask to speak to Kerry if you have any questions or concerns before you set off on the challenge.

The FrogMan Round is the big brother of The Pocket Round.

The FrogMan Round is an epic swim-run challenge devised and first completed by Natalie Hawkrigg and Clare Regan in 2021. It involves a complete traverse of all 42 summits of the Bob Graham Round (BGR) plus swims across four lakes – Buttermere, Wastwater, Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater. The Round is 77 miles and involves 27,500 feet of ascent and descent. It can be completed in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction and as an unsupported round or with support. There is no time constraint on completion.
